  • Description

THOUSANDS GATHERED IN HAVANA, THE CUBAN CAPITAL SEPT 19, TO SEE PRIME MINISTER FIDEL CASTRO, ATTEND THE PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY FOR A "POPULAR SONGS OF THE REVOLUTION" CONTEST.

HE CHOSE THE OCCASION TO DEFEND HIS ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. HE SAID THAT NO ONE IN THE CHURCH COULD SAY THAT THE REVOLUTION HAD INTERFERED WITH THEM. THE PEOPLE KNEW THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAD NEVER ATTACKED THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH AND THE ONLY PRIESTS WHO HAD LEFT THE COUNTRY WERE FASCISTS WHO HAD LEFT OF THEIR OWN FREE WILL.

TWO DAYS EARLIER BISHOP EDUARDO MASDIVAL AND 135 OTHER ROMAN CATHOLIC PRIESTS WERE EXPELLED FROM CUBA. FORTY-SIX PRIESTS, INCLUDING THE BISHOP, WERE CUBANS. THE EXPULSION OF THE PRIESTS - CLOSE TO HALF THE CLERGY THAT REMAINED IN CUBA - REPRESENTS THE CUBAN GOVERNMENT'S MOST VIGOROUS REACTION SO FAR A LARGE PROTEST DEMONSTRATION THAT ERUPTED A WEEK AGO IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH OF CHARITY.
