Background: For the third time in four years a North American-bred horse has won the Derby, England's greatest classic race.
The 192nd Derby was run today (Wednesday) at Epsom, south of London, in perfect weather which drew crowds of many thousands.
The event was won by Mill Reef, a little colt bred in the United States and owned by an American sportsman and philanthropist, Mr. Paul Mellon. Mill Reef's win confounded the critics who thought he couldn't stay the distance--but he did and came home to win by an easy two lengths.
