Don Wagstaff on Australia scored a decisive win over contestants from Britain and Canada to take the Commonwealth Games Gold Medal in and highboard diving events. Wagstaff, showing complete confidence and control throughout the contest, scored 485.73 points for his series of dives.
In his final dive Wagstaff performed a beautifully executed forward one and a half somersaults with three twists, one of the most intricate competition dives. His performance was almost perfect.
Philip Drew, England, who gained the silver medal, was throughout Wagstaff's greatest challenger. He scored a total of 429.24 points. He chose for his final dive a difficult inward two and a half somer-sault with pike. His landing was not good.
Another English contestant, Andy Gill, was third with an overall tally of 421.47, choosing as his final dive a standing double somer-sault from the tower.
Canada's medal hope, Ron Freisen, was unplaced after the final assessment although for his final dive in the contest he successfully accomplished a difficult somersault, twist and pike.
