    Patrick Sercu of Belgium - the fastest indoor cyclist in the world - got off to a flying start in the Skol Six-Day race at the Empire Pool, Wembley, in London on Thursday (September 20) when he and partner Gianni Motta of Italy won the 'Madison' team chase event.

    For five hours each evening, and an extra session on Saturday afternoon (September 22), competitors will b e racing around the steeply-banked track in pursuit of GBP5,000 in prizes and a car worth GBP1,000.

    It is the first event of a winter season that covers half a dozen European countries. Last year Sercu teamed with Londoner Tony Gowland to clinch the British Six-Day event. Before the 'Madison', Gowland and his new partner Graeme Gilmore of Australia won the 50-lap sprint event.
