  • Description

MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE, INCLUDING MANY WOMEN AND CHILDREN, LOST THEIR LIVES WHEN A FERRY BOAT OVERTURNED ON THE SHIRE RIVER IN CENTRAL MALAWI ON SUNDAY. MOST OF THE PASSENGERS WERE RETURNING FROM FORT JOHNSON ON THE SOUTHERN TIP OF LAKE MALAWI, WHERE THEY HEARD THE PRIME MINISTER, DR. HASTINGS BANDA, ADDRESS A POLITICAL RALLY.

DR. BANDA RECEIVED AN ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME AT THE RALLY. HIS MOTORCADE ARRIVED LATE, AFTER BEING HELD UP AT MANY VILLAGES ALONG THE ROUTE. THE FORT JOHNSON AREA HAD FORMERLY BEEN CONSIDERED AN AREA OF STRONG GOVERNMENT OPPOSITION.

MR. HENRY CHIPEMBERE, THE FORMER MINISTER OF EDUCATION, WHO DISAPPEARED AFTER RESIGNING HIS POST LAST SEPTEMBER, HAS BEEN ACCUSED BY DR. BANDA OF ORGANISING REBELLION IN THE FORT JOHNSON AREA. LAST WEEK DR. BANDA ANNOUNCED THAT MR. CHIPEMBERE HAD FLED TO THE UNITED STATES.

IN HIS ADDRESS TO THE RALLY, DR BANDA SAID THAT MR CHIPEMBERE WAS NOT A BRAVE OR DETERMINED LEADER, BUT "A COWARD AND A HYENA."
THE FERRY DISASTER IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THE BOAT HITTING FLOATING DEBRIS. THE WIRE GUIDING IT TO THE SHORE SNAPPED, AND THE FERRY OVERTURNED, THROWING THE PASSENGERS INTO THE WATER.
