  • Description

A FEMALE HIPPOPOTAMUS PRESENTED BY THE CITY OF TOKYO TO INDIA'S NEW PRIME MINISTER, MRS. INDIRA GANDHI, IS SETTLING IN AT NEW DELHI ZOO. THE INDIAN ZOO IS SAID TO BE THE LARGEST IN ASIA.

THE HIPPOPOTAMUS, NAMED "MISS KAWA", WAS GIVEN TO MRS. GANDHI TO MARK HER APPOINTMENT AS INDIA'S FIRST WOMAN PRIME MINISTER. IN 1949, WHEN MRS. GANDHI'S FATHER JAWAHARLAL NEHRU WAS PRIME MINISTER, HE PRESENTED AN ELEPHANT TO THE JAPANESE PEOPLE.

AT THE NEW DELHI ZOO MOST OF THE ANIMALS LIVE IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT. THERE IS AMPLE SPACE IN THE ZOO -- LAID OUT IN THE BACKGROUND OF THE OLD INDIAN FORT.

"MISS KAWA" IS SEPARATED BY A LOW WALL FROM THE NEW DELHI ZOO'S MALE HIPPOPOTAMUS "MANI". BOTH ANIMALS SPEND MOST OF THEIR TIME IN THE PONDS PROVIDED IN THEIR ENCLOSURES, BUT HAVE BEEN OBSERVED WATCHING ONE ANOTHER BATHING. LATER THEY WILL BOTH LIVE TOGETHER IN ONE ENCLOSURE.

THE JAPANESE GIFT HIPPOPOTAMUS ARRIVED BY SHIP AT CALCUTTA SEVERAL WEEKS AGO AND IS STILL RECEIVING TREATMENT FOR TWO SUPERFICIAL WOUNDS SUSTAINED DURING THE LONG SEA JOURNEY.
