Background: Thousands of people, from all classes of society, on Wednesday (5 November) paid their last respects to Italian film director, Pier Paolo Pasolini, who was found brutally murdered on a beach near Rome three days before.

Artists, actors and slum dwellers filed past his coffin to pay tribute to Pasolini as a man and a writer. He was a dedicated Marxist.

His followers have built a simple shrine at the place where he was found dead, at Ostia, a coastal resort south west of Rome.

Pasolini, who was 53, identified with the peasants and cultivated the company of criminal or near criminal classes. At the time of his death he was working on a film entitled "Sato" for "120 Day of Sodom".

Relatives said he would be buried on Thursday (6 November) Police have charged a 17-year-old youth who confessed to his murder.
