  • Description

Poland is getting ready for the visit by American President Jimmy Carter who arrives in the country on Thursday (29 December) at the start of a six-nation tour.

SYNOPSIS: President Carter can expect a warm welcome from the Polish people who, according to observers, have a great liking for him. One reason for his popularity is his recent call to grant Poland a 300-million-dollar loan to boost its economy.

During his three-day visit, he will give what is described as the first Press conference held in a Communist country by a United States President. About 500 journalists from both East and West will attend the conference - the biggest Press coverage of a single event in Polish history.

However, a request by a dissident Polish journal to attend the conference has met with no response from the Foreign Ministry. The Movement for the Defence of Human and Civil Rights, who publish the periodical `Opinia', said the Ministry had returned their letter unanswered. In the letter, Mr. Adam Wojciechowski said he wished to represent Opinia at the conference. But it came back in a Foreign Ministry envelope without comment.

Apart from Poland, President Cartar will also visit Iran, India, Saudi Arabia, France and Belgium. The tour should have taken place during November but he postponed it because of preoccupation with energy legislation at home.
