  • Description

The Spanish Navy was called in to battle a blaze aboard a 30,000 ton Norwegian tanker, the "Polycommander" which caught fire after grounding on a reef at the mouth of Vigo Harbour, northern Spain on Tuesday (May 5).

Port officials said that oil gushing from the tanker's side, after the holing, was set on fire by sparks from the engine of a passing fishing boat. The ship was soon burning from stern to midship and the crew of 39 took to their lifeboats, all of them are safe.

The Polycommander" was carrying 50,000 tons of crude oil, which burned fiercely and spread a pall of smoke over the nearby resorts of Nigran, Bayona and Playa America. Some of the oil was soaking into the beaches in the area.

The tanker, en route to Donges in France from Sidon in the Lebanon, was heading out to sea at the time, after an unscheduled stop to put a sick woman ashore for hospital treatment. The Captain had just restarted the engines after dropping the Pilot when the accident occurred about 10 miles (16 kms) from Port.
