Background: Business is booming in Japan for producers of mouth watering -- but inedible food.

Twenty small factories are turning out delicious looking prawns, tomatoes, meats and other food -- all made of wax or plastic.

And while a gourmet would be understandably repulsed after the first bite -- unless he had rather exotic tastes -- there is a serious commercial reason behind the idea.

Reports from Tokyo say business has not so good since the recession hit Japan. More and more restaurant have to keep changing their menus to satisfy "irritable and fickle customers worried by the economy."
The inedible "food is tastefully displayed on dishes to tempt the customers to enjoy the exact replica -- in real food -- at the tables.

According to Mr. Ryuishi Noguchi, the owner of the Hinode Sample Factory in Tokyo the orders are pouring in from restaurants for more of hid "food".

He prides himself on using the old style paraffin wax method, instead of the cheaper but less detailed plastic. And because of the heat problem with wax, his "menus" are only used in the best air-conditioned restaurants.

Otherwise his finely designed King Size Prawns and the like would simply melt away.

SYNOPSIS: It's enough to make your mouth water. A dish of delicious food prepared to tempt you into a restaurant in Tokyo, Japan."
But just try eating this particular food and you will end up at least with severe indigestion. For all this rice, the tomatoes, olives and the gravy are made of wax. Some twenty factories are turning out food samples all made of wax or plastic. And their owners say business is booming.

Reports from Tokyo say more and more restaurants are ordering the samples as they keep changing their menu displays to satisfy irritable and fickle customers worried by the economy. Mr. Ryuishi Noguchi, the owner of the Hinode Sample Factory prides himself on using the traditional paraffin wax method for his samples, instead of the cheaper but less detailed plastic. Because of the heat risk with wax, his products are only used in the best air-conditioned restaurants.

He also goes in for imitations of wax soda drinks, which are used to tempt thirsty as well as hungry customers into restaurants. Mr. Noguchi claims the recession in Japan is responsible for his ???.

He explained that restaurants customers have grown more critical about menus and their money. It's no longer a question of heading for the nearest restaurants from the office. People like to compare quality and process before trying the real thing. So inedible examples of the real food are tastefully displayed by restaurants.

Finally here is food being eaten in a restaurants... and this by the way is real food.
