  • Description

On the South Coast of New South Wales today, a helicopter manoeuvred across ragged country to complete in a few hours a cable-laying job which normally would have taken weeks. The helicopter took from a gorge between the Cordeaux and Avon dams, to string a rope line across a steep timber-covered valley. Hovering above one hill top the pilot dropped an end of the line to a waiting winch crew on the ground. A signal flag was used to tell the pilot that the rope had fallen accurately and had been taken by the winch crew. While the aircraft remained steadily overhead, the ground crew fixed the rope end to another long line would on the winch drum. The first part of the job was complete and now the helicopter swung across the valley, trailing the rope. The idea of the job was to secure the line from hilltop to hilltop so that electric transmission cable can be pulled easily across the gorge, to supply power to a pumping station at the Avon Dam. Trailing across danes scrub like that below would have taken ground teams several weeks. Now the rope was bridging the valley. The other end was dropped to the second winch team and a difficult project was completed.
