  • Description

THE HONG KONG GOVERNMENT HAS BANNED ROWDY GATHERINGS - DEMONSTRATORS HAVE BEEN TOLD THEY CAN ONLY PETITION THE GOVERNOR, SIR DAVID TRENCH, IN SMALL GROUPS. BUT UNTIL YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) ANTI-BRITISH DEMONSTRATIONS HAD CONTINUED VIRTUALLY UNABATED FOR FOUR DAYS. THEY HAD BECOME MORE DISCIPLINED, HOWEVER. MOB PROTEST HAD GIVEN WAY TO A SUSTAINED PUBLIC INDICTMENT OF OFFICIAL BRITISH BEHAVIOUR DURING THE RECENT KOWLOON RIOTS.

YESTERDAY MARKED THE FOURTH SUCCESSIVE DAY OF DEMONSTRATIONS OUTSIDE GOVERNMENT HOUSE AND OTHER BRITISH GOVERNMENT OFFICES.

MORE THAN 2,000 WORKERS, YOUTHS AND SCHOOLCHILDREN CONVERGED ON THE HOME OF THE GOVERNOR TO MAKE A RENEWED PROTEST.

BUT THIS TIME THEY TOOK TURNS IN MARCHING TWO ABREAST UP TO THE CHAINED MAIN GATES TO PUT UP FRESH POSTERS AND RECITE SELECTIONS OF MAO TSE-TUNG'S THOUGHTS.

THE DEMONSTRATION LOST ITS ORDERLY MANNER WHEN A GROUP OF YOUTHS ATTACKED MEMBERS OF A BRITISH BROADCASTING COMMISSION FILM UNIT AND TRIED TO SNATCH THEIR CAMERA. POLICE MOVED IN WHEN SEVERAL YOUTHS WERE SEEN PUNCHING THE CAMERAMAN, BUT HE WAS NOT BADLY HURT.

DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED ON GOVERNMENT OFFICES CHANTING SLOGANS AND DAUBING WALLS WITH PAINT. IN ALMOST EVERY CASE THE SLOGANS WERE PRO-PEKING.
