  • Description

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Opposition leader Shimon Peres ended prolonged talks on the Middle East Sunday night (9 July) still divided. The two men failed to issue a joint statement or to agree to meet again as they did after a first meeting in Saltzburg last February.

SYNOPSIS: The day's talks in Vienna began with a meeting between President Sadat and the Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky. Kreisky, together with former German Chancellor Willy Brandt set up a meeting between Sadat and Peres. Last week President Sadat unveiled a new peace plan which calls for Israel withdrawal from all occupied Arab land including East Jerusalem. The plan has already been rejected by Israel's Likud bloc Government.

Shimon Peres on Sunday reiterated the Israeli Labour Party's position that the Palestinian problem was of key importance. The first meeting was described as happy and constructive. But Peres said afterwards "we still differ on key points".

The talks in Vienna have taken on particular significance because of the imminent resumption of ministerial negotiations between Egypt and Israel. The Foreign Ministers of the two countries are due to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance in London on July 18. After a four-sided meeting including Messrs. Kreisky, Brandt and Sadat, Mr. Peres met alone with Mr. Sadat, but there was little sign of agreement Sunday night. A statement by Dr. Kreisky and Mr. Brandt on Monday containing their recommendations for a Middle East settlement, is promised.
