    SEA EROSION AN SILTING HAS BECOME A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR THE DISTRICT OF KETA ON THE SOUTH EASTERN COAST OF GHANA. RECENTLY FURTHER INSTANCES OF FLOODING AND DAMAGE PROMPTED A VISIT FROM THE VICE-CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, MR. J.W.K. HARLLEY.

    KETA IS SITUATED ION A NARROW STRIP OF LAND HEMMED IN BY THE SEA AND A LAGOON. FOR MANY YEARS THE LOCAL PEOPLE HAVE BEEN FIGHTING A LOSING BATTLE AGAINST THE ADVANCING WATERS, AND MANY BUILDINGS AND HOMES HAVE BEEN SWALLOWED BY THE SEA. THE DISTRICT USED TO BE A FLOURISHING COMMERCIAL CENTRE, BUT IS NOW DORMANT AND IS GRADUALLY BECOMING MORIBUND.

    THE LATEST OCCURRENCES INCLUDED THE WASHING AWAY OF THE MAIN ROAD FORM KETA TO DENU. DURING HIS VISIT MR. HARLLEY, WHO IS ALSO INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE, WATCHED THE EMERGENCY BUILDING OF A NEW LINK-ROAD. HE PROMISED GOVERNMENT AID FOR THE AREA. ACCOMPANYING MR. HARLLEY ON THE TOUR WERE THE CHAIRMAN OF THE KETA DISTRICT ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEE, POLICE SUPERINTENDENT KENNETH KPOBI, THE DISTRICT ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER FOR KETA, MR. E.A. SAI AND OTHER OFFICIALS.
