Background: High fashion threatened to take first place from horse-racing at Royal Ascot's "Ladies Day" on thursday (June 22).

The name "Ladies Day" was first used to describe the nares which customarily ran on this third day of the week-long meeting. But now tradition has given way to fashion, and the women of Britain have adopted the day as their own and as an opportunity to outdress each other.

Period dress was perhaps the most popular style this year, with 1920-style droopy crepe and lace dresses leading by a length from Edwardian attire dating from the beginning of the century.

Wearing a more conservative medium-length dress, Queen Elizabeth of Britain attended the meeting, escorted by the Shah of Iran. The Shah has been in Britain since Wednesday (21 June) and has so far attended two days of Royal Ascot.

Meanwhile the racing itself was not entirely forgotten. The winner of the Gold Cup, the main race of the six-event day, stood to win a total of GBP18,500 starling in prize money. Rock Roi was disqualified from first place for the second year running - this time for bumping second-placed Erimo Hawk, who was given first place. Last year, Rock Roi was disqualified after dope tests.

SYNOPSIS: The Royal Ascot week-long race-meeting is traditionally the highpoint of Britain's summer season, and on Thursday -- the third day of the event -- the sun actually did shine on the racecourse after one of the coldest summers around. Thursday was also "Ladies Day", and the racing itself was almost forgotten as the ladies tried to outdo each other by wearing the most fashionable - or outrageous - of costumes.

Queen Elizabeth of Britain was escorted by the Shah of Iran, and was content to study the fashions rather than wear them.

Many were prepared for colder weather, although at least one young lady was better equipped for the sun.

Despite the efforts of the ladies, the more serious business of horse-racing was not entirely forgotten.

The main event of the six-race day was the Ascot Gold Cup, which carried a prize of more than eighteen-thousand pounds. Favourite for the event was Rock Roi, here already in the lead coming into the last straight. Rock Roi was first past the post last year, but was disqualified a month later after routine tests for drugs. In an exciting finish, Rock Roi was again first through the winning post this year, beating Erimo Hawk by a head. But again Rock Rio's owners were in for a shock. After the finish the judges announced an inquiry. Minutes later they declared the ill-fated Rock Roi disqualified for bumping into Erimo Hawk who was declared the winner.
