SYNOPSIS: On Thursday (21 April) the beleagured Government of Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali, Mr. Bhutto declared martial law in Karachi and two other main cities - Lahore and Hyderabad.

To date, at least 240 people have died in the violence brought on by unrest in the face of united opposition to Mr. Bhutto and his ruling Pakistan People's Party.

Opposition parties claim Mr. Bhutto and his party forged the results of the general elections he and his party overwhelmingly won in March. Mr. Bhutto has offered to run some local elections again, but opposition parties say it's too late. They want his resignation. The opposition campaign against Mr. Bhutto and his party has been running for seven weeks since the March seventh elections.

The curfew in Karachi has been relaxed for several hours each day. But in the meantime, at least seven million Pakistanis have now been forced to keep their grievances indoors.
