  • Description

POPE PAUL PRAYED FOR PEACE IN VIETNAM, AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST, AFTER CARRYING A CROSS IN THE TRADITIONAL GOOD FRIDAY CEREMONY OF THE "VIA CRUCIS", THE WAY OF THE CROSS, TO THE TOP OF THE PALATINE HILL IN ROME.

THE POPE HELD UP THE CRUCIFIXION OF CHRIST AS AN EXAMPLE OF SALVATION THROUGH NON-VIOLENCE. THE 71-YEAR-OLD PONTIFF WAS SPEAKING FROM AN ALTAR SET AMID THE RUINS OF ANCIENT ROMAN TEMPLES AND VILLAS ON THE PALATINE HILL.

SPEAKING OF THE CRUCIFIXION, THE POPE SAID: "JESUS SHOWED HIMSELF THERE IN A COMPLETE STATE OF WEAKNESS, OF HUMAN DEFEAT, OF NON-VIOLENCE".

BEFORE HIS ADDRESS, THE POPE CARRIED A WOODEN CROSS IN PROCESSION UP THE SIDE OF THE GRASSY HILL, WHERE ABOUT 5,000 PILGRIMS WATCHED HIM IN A STEADY DRIZZLE. HE CARRIED THE CROSS FOR THE LAST FOUR OF THE 14 "STATIONS OF THE CROSS", WHICH RECALL THE 14 INCIDENTS OF CHRIST'S CRUCIFIXION.

AT THE ALTAR THE POPE SAID: "OUR VIA CRUCIS ENDS WITH A PRAYER FOR PEACE IN OUR SOULD, REDEEMED BY THE CROSS, AND FOR THE PEACE OF THE WORLD FOR WHOSE SALVATION CHRIST GAVE HIS BLOOD. ESPECIALLY WE WANT TO PRAY FOR THE PEOPLES AND REGIONS WHERE PEACE DOES STILL NOT EXIST".

THE POPE NAMED: "THE DISTANT BUT TO US SPIRITUALLY NEAR VIETNAM, WHERE HATRED AND REVENGE REIGN AND WHERE BLOOD IS BEING SHED; AFRICA, SO SERIOUSLY AFFLICTED BY AN IMPLACABLE FRATRICIDAL CONFLICT; AND THE COUNTRY WHICH WAS THAT OF JESUS, WHERE OUR THOUGHTS AND OUR BEST WISHES STILL LIE".
