  • Description

As civilians in Saigon prepared at the end of January for the celebrations of the Tet Lunar New Year, the military authorities showed signs of readiness to meet possible Communist attacks.

Government spokesmen deny that troops in Saigon have been put on the alert, but since the offensive of 1968 which came at this time, Tet has produced a military alert.

Both South Vietnamese and United States military officials are reported to most fear an offensive in the Central Highlands area, and have therefore mounted an offensive there of the Korean Tiger Division, involving two full regiments.

They're receiving the customary artillery support from U.S. destroyers patrolling off the Vietnam coast, which has been maintained since the war began.
