Background: A public hearing began in Brussels this week on the role of nuclear power in energy supply. Sponsored by the Commission of the European Communities, the aim of the discussions is to examine the value and safety of nuclear energy and to help inform public opinion.

SYNOPSIS: Held in the Heysel exhibition hall in Brussels, the hearing began on Monday (November 28) before an invited audience of reporters, observers from international organisations and members of the European Parliament. It was opened by Dr. Guido Brunner, a member of the Commission, who is chairing the discussions.

Dr. Brunner explained that the Commission sought to obtain the facts on energy and what it meant for mankind. The aim was to bring into the open the real dilemmas about nuclear power, its promise in the energy field, and all its economic, technological and environmental implications. He said the man in the street had to take part in the decision-making process.
