Later in the day, the freighter was still smouldering and the fires on the tanker Tien Chee hadn't yet been extinguished. the two ships and separated, however.

    It's reported there were no survivors among the 63 crew and 10 passengers aboard the 7,1113-ton British freighter. There's also been no sign of the Argentine pilot who was aboard at the time of the collision, which occurred 40 miles (65 kms) southwest of Montevideo.

    Eight of the 12,600-ton tankers's 40 crew were also reported missing on Reported (12 May) in the wake of the inferno which swept both ships after they crashed together.

    The still-burning hulk of the shattered British freighter was towed into Montevideo harbour on Friday. Earlier, boarding parties had recovered 19 bodies form the ship.

    The badly-listing Royston grange was finally anchored near the spot where the German pocket battleship Graf Spee was scuttled during World War Two. But it was reported that rescue workers hadn't been able to check the entire ship because firemen were still fighting the flames.

    The ship had left Buenoe Aires for London on Wednesday (10 May) with a cargo of chilled beef.

    One of the survivors of the tanker's crew, brought ashore with others late Thursday, said there was a crash was the two ships struck and he jumped overboard, swimming for his life as flames raced across the water.

    Britain has ordered an immediate inquiry into the collision and plans are under way to send a senior investigator to the scene.
