  • Description

AT THE END OF 12-DAYS OF HARD BARGAINING, FRENCH AND ALGERIAN DELEGATES MET MAR. 18 AT A LADE-SIDE HOTEL AT EVIAN, FRANCE, AND SIGNED A "CEASE-FIRE" AGREEMENT TO END THE MORE THAN SEVEN-YEAR-OLD WAR IN ALGERIA.

SENSING THAT AND END TO NEGOTIATIONS WAS IN SIGHT, REPORTERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS THRONGED THE HEAVILY GUARDED PERIMETER OF THE HOTEL GROUNDS TO CATCH A GLIMPSE OF M. LOUIS JOXE, MINISTER FOR ALGERIAN AFFAIRS IN THE FRENCH CABINET, AND M. BELKACEN KRIM, LEADER OF THE ALGERIAN DELEGATION.

THE AGREEMENT WAS SOLEMNLY SIGNED IN THE EVENING. IT IS IN TWO PARTS. THE FIRST CONCERNS THE CEASE-FIRE. SECONDLY, THE MINISTERS SIGNED DECLAMATIONS OF INTENTION ON THE FUTURE OF ALGERIA. THE AGREEMENT SETS IN TRAIN A SERIES OF MEASURES TO SOLVE THE ALGERIAN PROBLEM.

LOOKING RELAXED, AND NOT A LITTLE BIT TRIUMPHANT, M. BELKACEN KRIM AND HIS DELEGATION LEFT AFTERWARDS IN HELICOPTERS OF THE SWISS AIR FORCE FOR THEIR RESIDENCE ON THE SWISS SIDE LAKE. THEY WERE RETURNING TO TUNIS TO REPORT TO THEIR GOVERNMENT. MOHAMMED BEN BELLA, VICE-PREMIER OF THE ALGERIAN REBEL "GOVERNMENT" AND LEADER OF THE REBELLION, WAS FREED MAR. 18 AFTER FIVE-YEARS DETENTION IN FRANCE. HE TOO, IMMEDIATELY FLEW TO MOROCCO VIA GENEVA.
