  • Description

An Italian two-seater civil helicopter crashed in Rome's Piazza dell'Esedra, Nov 9, while trying to make an emergency landing. The pilot and mechanic and three people in the street sustained slight injuries.

Owned by a private company, the helicopter had left one of Rome's smaller airports on a flight to Naples, when it suddenly developed engine trouble. The pilot tried to take his machine back to Rome, but the engine cut out completely as he was flying over the Piazza dell'Esedra.

Using the rotor to obtain a braking effect, the pilot attempted an emergency landing. Then the tail end of the helicopter was caught in an overhead cable and the front part crashed heavily on the ground. A rotor blade smashed the side of a trolley bus, causing considerable damage. Fortunately, nobody was killed.
