  • Description

ALTHOUGH MANY FARMS IN WEST GERMANY HAVE BECOME MECHANIZED IN RECENT YEARS, THE DEMAND FOR AGRICULTURAL WORKERS HAS NOT DECREASED, AND THE SHORTAGE IS BECOMING ACUTE.

FIRM SHOT MAY 18, SHOWS ONE OF THE MEASURES TAKEN TO MEET THE DEMAND FOR EXPERIENCED TRACTOR DRIVERS. YOUNG WOMEN, MOSTLY DAUGHTERS OF FARMERS, ARE TAKING PART IN AN EXPERIMENT AT THE DEULA - GERMAN LAND MACHINE SCHOOL - AT WUNSTORF, HANOVER. THEY ARE TRAINED TO DRIVE TRACTORS SO THAT DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS THEY WILL BE ABLE TO MEET THE DEMAND FOR SEASONAL LABOUR.

THE GIRLS, WHO HAVE RESPONDED WELL TO THIS TRAINING, LEARN NOT ONLY TO DRIVE THE MACHINES BUT ALSO LEARN PRACTICAL MAINTENANCE AND VARIED AGRICULTURAL TECHNIQUES. MORE THAN 100 GIRLS ARE AT PRESENT RECEIVING TRAINING, AT TWELVE SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
