  • Description

LIFE APPEARED ALMOST NORMAL YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) IN THE ARAB SECTION OF JERUSALEM IN SPITE OF A LONG-STANDING CALL BY THE EX-MAYOR OF JERUSALEM, RUHI EL-KATIB, FOR A GENERAL STRIKE AGAINST ISRAEL'S MOVES TO UNITE THE TWO SECTORS OF THE CITY.

SOME ARAB SHOPS WERE CLOSED BUT MOST WERE OPEN, AND SCHOOL CHILDREN ATTENDED CLASSES. THERE WERE MORE POLICE PATROLS THAN USUAL, BUT THIS IS ATTRIBUTED TO TIGHTER SECURITY FOLLOWING FRIDAY'S EXPLOSION AT A SUPERMARKET IN THE JEWISH SECTOR.

THE SITUATION WAS DIFFERENT HOWEVER, IN THE TOWN OF NABLUS, NOT FAR FROM JERUSALEM, ON THE OCCUPIED WEST BANK. THERE SHOPS WERE CLOSED, CHILDREN KEPT AWAY FROM SCHOOL AND DEMONSTRATIONS HELD IN PRAISE OF PRESIDENT NASSER HELD.
