  • Description

More than 3,000 people - among them delegates from Britain, France, Belgium, Holland and Yugoslavia - gathered at the site of the former concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen near Soltau, West Germany, June 5, for a ceremony in memory of those killed in the gas chambers.

Flags and wreaths sent by many nations were carried in procession to the Bergen-Belsen memorial, where the assembly heard a speech by Dr Russauet, Vice-President of VVN, the "Association of Victims of Nazi Persecution". Dr Russauet recalled the days of horror which ended fifteen years ago when British troops moved into the area and liberated the inmates of the camp.

Reports say that VVN has been banned in parts of the Federal Republic, including Bavaria and Wuerttemberg, because of "Communist activities". The memorial meeting at Belsen was the first public gathering of the association's members for some time.
