  • Description

The new world record-holder for the women's 100 yard sprint, Marlene Matthews of Sydney, said today that she hoped to be the first woman in the world to run the 100 yards in ten seconds. At last night's record-breaking race, the judges were ready and the vital wind gauge showed a complete absence of wind assistance. At the start Marlene is second from the left and Betty Cuthbert second from the right. Marlene flashed ahead and broke the tape with a four-foot lead. Among the crowd, Marlene's coach, Bill Harrison, waits anxiously for the official time. The girls gathered round their new champion, who'd become the world's fastest sprinter...clipping one tenth of a second off the existing record to set a new time of 10.3 seconds.
