    STOKELY CARMICHAEL, AMERICAN NEGRO MILITANT LEADER, FLEW INTO ALGIERS ON SATURDAY (19 JULY) TO ATTEND THE PAN-AFRICAN CULTURAL FESTIVAL, WHICH BEGINS THERE ON JULY 21.

    HE ARRIVED AT ALGIERS AIRPORT WITH A LARGE FESTIVAL DELEGATION FROM GUINEA, WHERE HE NOW LIVES AT CONAKRY.

    WITH HIM WAS HIS WIFE, SOUTH AFRICAN BORN SINGER MIRIAM MAKEBA, WHO IS DUE TO PERFORM IN THE FESTIVAL, AND THEIR SON LUMUMBA.

    LITTLE HAS BEEN HEARD OF THE 28-YEAR-OLD NEGRO LEADER SINCE HE WITHDREW LAST JULY FROM THE LEADERSHIP OF THE MILITANT UNITED STATES BLACK PANTHER MOVEMENT, AFTER DENOUNCING IT FOR ALLYING ITSELF WITH 'WHITE RADICALS'.

    THIRTY INDEPENDENT NATIONS HAVE SENT DELEGATIONS TO THE FESTIVAL, WHICH WILL INCLUDE FILMS, THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS, CONCERTS, AND A SYMPOSIUM ON THE PROBLEMS OF AFRICA. OTHER MILITANT LEADERS ARE ATTENDING, INCLUDING FORMER BLACK PANTHER ELORIDGE CLEAVER, WHO TOLD JOURNALISTS ON THURSDAY THAT HE IS WILLING TO RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES TO STAND TRIAL ON CHARGES OF ALLEGED PAROLE VIOLATION.
