    IN MALAWI, ENGINEERS ARE BUILDING A BIG BRIDGE ACROSS THE SHIRE RIVER, 30 MILES SOUTH OF BLANTYRE IN THE CHIKAWAWA AREA, TO REPLACE A FERRY SERVICE. MALAWI IS ANXIOUS TO REPLACE ALL ITS FERRIES FOLLOWING THE SINKING OF A FERRY ON THE SHIRE RIVER NEAR LIWONDE LAST YEAR WHEN A NUMBER OF PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES.

    THE FERRY TO BE REPLACED CHUGS ACROSS THE RIVER ALONGSIDE THE NEW BRIDGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION. WORK BEGAN ON THE BRIDGE ALMOST EXACTLY ONE YEAR AGO, AND IT'S EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED AT ABOUT THIS TIME NEXT YEAR. THE BRIDGE WILL BE 24 FEET (7 METRES) WIDE AND 640 FEET (ABOUT 200 METRES) LONG. IT WILL RISE 51 FEET (ABOUT 15 1/2 METRES) ABOVE THE RIVER BED.
