    ON NOVEMBER 7, EVE OF THE TOKYO PARALYMPIC GAMES, THE 'VILLAGE' WHICH HOUSES 400 PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED ATHLETES FROM 22 NATIONS, WAS VISITED BY JAPAN'S CROWD PRINCE AKIHITO AND PRINCESS MICHIKO. THE ATHLETES, ALL IN WHEELCHAIRS, WERE INTRODUCED TO THEM.

    THE FIVE-DAY EVENT BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 8. THE GAMES WERE FIRST STARTED IN 1952 AND THE HELD EACH YEAR AT STOKE MANDEVILLE HOSPITAL IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, ENGLAND, EXCEPT IN OLYMPIC GAMES YEARS WHEN, IF POSSIBLE, THEY ARE HELD AFTER THE OLYMPICS AND UNDER OLYMPIC CONDITIONS.

    COMPETITORS CONTEST GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE MEDALS IN JAVELIN THROWING, WHEELCHAIR SLALOM, PENTATHLON, WOMEN'S FENCING AND FEATHER-WEIGHT WEIGHTLIFTING.

    THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PARALYMPIC GAMES WAS ALSO INTRODUCED TO THE JAPANESE PRINCE AND PRINCESS.

    THE ATHLETES LATER ASSEMBLED IN A HUGE DINING HALL FOR A RECEPTION. WHEN FOOD WAS SERVED, MOST OF THEM PREFERRED TO EAT THE JAPANESE STYLE -- WITH CHOPSTICKS ALTHOUGH IT WAS DIFFICULT AT FIRST.
