    President Marien Ngouabi of the People's Republic of the Congo officially opened the twenty-sixth Military Football games in Brazzaville on Thursday (June 21).

    Two teams each from Africa, Europe and Asia were due to compete in the Stadium of the Revolution but the Greek team did not come.

    Teams representing the military forces of the People's Republic of the Congo, Italy, Iraq, Kuwait and the Ivory Coast took part in the ceremonial march past around the stadium before the football began.

    Thousands came to watch, for football is a popular game in the Congo Republic.

    Last year the national team won the African Nations Soccer Cup at Yaounde in Cameroun after beating Mali by three goals to two in the final.

    But in the opening game of the Military Championships the Congo Republic's team was beaten by Kuwait by three goals to one.

    SYNOPSIS: Thousands came to the Stadium of the Revolution at Brazzaville in the People's Republic of the Congo for international military football on Thursday.

    It was the twenty-sixth championship of military football in Brazzaville. Co??? Republic performed the official opening ceremony.

    Football is a very popular sport in Brazzaville and has thousands of enthusiastic fans.

    The theme of the games was "Friendship Through Sports". Two teams each from Africa, Asia and Europe were due to take part.

    But the Greek team did not come. Teams from Iraq, the Ivory Coast, Italy, Kuwait and the Congo Republic were competing. Italy's national side is one o the strongest football sides in the world. They were finalists in the last World Cup.

    With President Ngouabi were the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces and the President of the Congolese Olympic Committee.

    The Congo Republic has a fine national team. Last year they beat Mali to win the African Nations Cup. But their military team did not fare so well in the first game of last week's competition -- they lost three goals to one to Kuwait.
