    Former President Harry S.Truman received the annual Freedom House award in New York City on the 20th anniversary of his becoming U-S President.

    On Tuesday, April 13, former President Harry S.Truman received the annual Freedom House award before 12-hundred guests at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.

    Six men who were members of his cabinet were present.Chief Justice Earl Warren presented Truman with a bronze plaque and said, "this occasion marks the happy conjunction of an institution and an individual who have supplied the sustaining force in the pursuit of freedom."
    The reference was to the 25th anniversary of Freedom House, a non-political organization devoted to promoting the principles of freedom.

    A telegram from President Lyndon Johnson was read.It said: Mr.Truman is the man to whom the cause of freedom owes its greatest debt.

    Mr.Truman, after receiving the award, said the most important freedoms were: freedom from economic bondage, freedom from fear and freedom from political subjugation.

    Mr.Truman was the American Vice president in 1945 when President Franklin D.Roosevelt died.Truman served until 1948, when he ran for the office he was elected.He served until 1952, when he retired from office.
