  • Description

A United Nations cocoa conference opened in Geneva on Monday (6 March) in an effort to close the gap between international producers and consumers of the product. The Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Senor Manuel Porez-Guerrero, told the delegates that it was a historic moment and the conference couldn't afford to fail in the face of a situation that called for urgent remedial action. He added that behind the figures of a damagingly fluctuating market and the zig-zagging of price lines lay the lives of millions of people who depended directly upon cocoa.

Thirty-nine countries, including all the major cocoa-producing and cocoa-consuming nations sent delegates and another 11 countries sent observers.

The conference is expected to set up a negotiating committee of the world's major cocoa producers and consumers to work out an ???eptable draft text of agreement which could be presented to the UNCTAD and taken up again at a resumed full cocoa conference in June and July.
