Louis Armastrong-"Satchmo"-was 70 on July 70. He was interviewed just before his birthday in Los Angles recently (July 2) and asked about his recent sickness -- a kidney illness -- which has kept him from playing for the past two years.
Louis Armstrong was born on July 4 -- American Independence day -- in 1900, in the brothel district of New Orleans. His name has become synonymous with Jazz everywhere. He has travelled all over the world including the Communist countries, communicating in terms which overcome every language barrier. As he has put it: "A note's a note in any language, if you hit it on the head."
"Satchmo" -- short for Satchel-mouth-has been at the top of show business for fifty years, ever since he was taught to play the Cornet by Joe "King" Oliver after Armstrong had just come out of a reformatory. He began playing on the Mississippi Riverboats before going to Chicago to record with his famous "Hot Five" Jazzband.
Louis Armostrong has countless hit records to his name, has appeared before royalty on several occasions and starred in such films as "New Oreleans", "High Society" and the "Glenn Miller Story". On Friday (July 3) a concert was held in Los Angeles in his honour. The proceeds of the concert, which he attended, will go towards erecting a statue to him in New Orlsans, the birthplace of Louis Armstrong, the birthplace of Jazz.
