Background: Car-workers in Birmingham marched in protest on Friday (1st January) against the right-wing British Conservative Government's proposed Trade Union reform bill.

About 5000 work people marched waving banners and shouting Anti-Government slogans. The protest was good natured but is expected to be the beginning of a mounting wave of demonstrations against the proposals.

The car workers -- mainly from Austin-Morris plants -- has taken New Year's Day off as a token strike against the reforms. Many more workers took part in the march than organisers had predicted.

Ten of thousands of workers were reported to have stayed away from work in the Birmingham area during the day but it was difficult to tell how many stayed away just because it was the New Year, Holiday.
