  • Description

SHEIKH MOHAMMED ABDULLAH WHO WAS RELEASED FROM PRISON IN JAMMU ON APRIL 8 HAS BEEN CONTINUING HIS SLOW JOURNEY DOWN TO SRINAGAR IN THE VALE OF KASHMIR. WHEN HE REACHED DODA ON TUESDAY MUSLIM WOMEN SHOWERED HIM WITH FLOWERS WHILE YOUTH SHOUTED SLOGANS DEMANDING SELF-DETERMINATION FOR KASHMIR. WHILE THE MUSLIMS FROM THE TOWN WELCOMED THE SHEIKH, FIFTEEN HUNDRED NON-MUSLIMS STOOD AS SILENT SPECTATORS TO THE PROCESSION.

THE SHEIKH, WHO PLAYED A LEADING PART IN BRINGING ABOUT KASHMIR'S ACCESSION TO INDIA IN 1947 HAS BEEN IN PRISON ON CHARGES OF CONSPIRING TO OVERTHROW THE KASHMIR GOVERNMENT AND OF ATTEMPTING TO ARRANGE THE ANNEXATION OF THE STATE BY PAKISTAN. HE WAS RELEASED WHEN THESE CHARGES WERE WITHDRAWN.

SPEAKING AT ANANTNAG TODAY, (FRIDAY) SHEIKH ABDULLAH SAID HE WAS REMOVED FROM THE PREMIERSHIP OF KASHMIR IN 1953 BECAUSE HE HAD REFUSED TO DECLARE THAT KASHMIR HAD ACCEDED TO INDIA FINALLY." HE WENT ON TO CALL FOR INDEPENDENCE FOR THE STATE, WHICH HAS BEEN A CONSTANT SOURCE OF DISPUTE BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN SINCE THEY BECAME INDEPENDENT IN 1947. THE SHEIKH SAID THAT KASHMIRIS WOULD NOT REST UNTIL THEY ACHIEVED SELF-DETERMINATION. HE SAID HIS RELEASE WAS A DEFEAT FOR THE DESIGNS OF THE INDIAN AND KASHMIR GOVERNMENTS TO SUPPRESS THE RIGHT OF SELF-DETERMINATION FOR KASHMIRIS. HE WANTED INDIA TO REALISE THE TIME WAS PAST WHEN A COUNTRY COULD BE POSSESSED FORCIBLY. "ALL TALKS OF KASHMIR BEING AN INTEGRAL PART OF INDIA WAS NONSENSE", HE CONCLUDED.
