    On the eve of the announcement of the british government's new immigration regulations, the defence Secretary, Lord Carrington, had talks in Kenya with President Kenyatta.

    Lord Carrington is on a tour which will also take him to South-East Asia, including Australia and New Zealand. His discussions cover a number of issues, including immigration.

    The British government on Thursday (24 Jan) announced it would not accept another sudden mass influx of British Asians similar to that from Uganda last year. This followed a political storm in Britain over the admission of 27-thousand Asians with British passports who were expelled from Uganda by president Amin.

    There has been recent speculation in the press that the Kenyan government was under popular pressure to follow President Amin's example. There are about 35-thousand Asians with British passports in Kenya.

    SYNOPSIS: In the gardens of State House in Nairobi this week, Britain's Defence Secretary, Lord Carrington, met the President of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta. Lord Carrington visited Kenya as part of a tour which was also to take him to South-East Asia, including Australia and New Zealand.

    His talks with President Kenyatta came on the eve of the announcement in London that Britain was tightening its immigration regulations to prevent another mass influx of Asians. This followed a political row over the admission of 27-thousand Asians with British passports expelled by Uganda last year. There has been press speculation that the Kenyan government was under popular pressure to follow President Idi Amin's example. There are about 35-thousand British Asians in Kenya.
