  • Description

British entry Great Britain Two was leading the Whitbread Round the World Yacht race by two hundred miles on Friday (January 4).

Filmed near the New Zealand coast, Great Britain Two is heading across the Pacific to Cape Horn on the third leg from Sydney to Rio de Janeiro.

British yachtsman Chay Blyth, who has sailed round the world single-handed, is captain of the boat. Private Bernard Hosking, one of his crew of ten paratroopers was washed overboard on January 6. Private Hosking is the third sailor feared drowned since the race began.

The French ketch Pen Duick VI was the early leader of the fourteen yachts in the race but skipper Eric Tabarly was forced to return to Sydney with a broken main mast. It will be another two weeks before a new one can be made and Kriter, another French entry, has stolen second place. The Mexican boat Sayula II is third.
