    A FINAL ENTRY LIST OF 82 AIRCRAFT, WORTH MORE THAN GBP1,000,000 STERLING, WILL BE TRYING TO CAPTURE PRIZED TOTALLING MORE THAN GBP50,000 STERLING IN THE WORLD'S BIGGEST, RICHEST, AND LONGEST AIR RACE.

    THE SMALLER, SLOWER AIRCRAFT WERE THE FIRST TO LEAVE, BEING FLAGGED AWAY BY SIR FRANCIS CHICHESTER, THE FAMOUS YACHTSMAN, WHO HIMSELF ONCE WAS A WELL-KNOWN AVIATOR AND MADE HIS FIRST SOLO FLIGHT TO AUSTRALIA 40 YEARS AGO.

    MISS JEAN BATTEN, CBE, WHO STILL HOLDS THE SOLO SINGLE-ENGINE ENGLAND-AUSTRALIA RECORD OF FIVE DAYS 21 HOURS THAT SHE SET UP IN 1936, WAS AT THE AIRPORT TO WISH THE COMPETITORS BON VOYAGE.

    THE RACE IS BEING RUN ON HANDICAP, BASED ON 'BROCHURE PERFORMANCE' AND THE START IS STAGGERED OVER THREE DAYS, WITH THE BULK OF THE AIRCRAFT TAKING OFF TOMORROW AND SATURDAY.

    ALL COMPETITORS HAVE TO MAKE SEVEN COMPULSORY CONTROL-POINT STOPS - AT ATHENS, KARACHI, CALCUTTA, SINGAPORE, DARWIN, ALICE SPRINGS, AND ADELAIDE.

    THE RACE COMMEMORATES THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST FLIGHT BETWEEN ENGLAND AND AUSTRALIA BY ROSS AND KEITH SMITH, AND ALSO FORMS PART OF THE CELEBRATIONS TO MARK THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF CAPTAIN COOK'S DISCOVERY OF AUSTRALIA.
