  • Description

The Cunard Steamship Company's famed superliner Queen Mary sailed into the port of New York for the last time Thursday (21 September) as city officials and maritime firms put the finishing touches to plans for an historic farewell for the old ship Friday (22 September).
The ship was under the command of Captain J. Treasure Jones as she was pushed into her berth in the Hudson River by tugs. The trip to New York will end Friday as she sails of her 1,000th trip across the Atlantic Ocean to Southampton and Cherbourg.
The crossing will bring to an end the oceanliner's 31-year history, which saw her dodge German submarines during World War II as she ferried more than 760,000 troops to the European battlefields.
The "Mary" and her sister ship, the Queen Elizabeth, are victims of the jet age. The number of passengers and the corresponding revenue of both ships has decreased steadily during the last two decades with the increase of air travel across the Atlantic. Recently, the "Mary" has been losing 2,000,000 dollars a year.
From 1938 to 1952, she held the coveted "Blue Riband" for the fastest transatlantic crossing.
As the ship neared the pier Thursday, the passengers, United States citizens included, burst into choruses of the "Rule Britannia" and "God Save the Queen."
After her return voyage to Europe, the ship will sail to Long Beach, California where she will be converted into maritime museum.
