  • Description

More than 5,000 University students and 60,000 secondary school pupils have boycotted classes in Madagascar in solidarity with medical students who have been on strike since January demanding better working conditions, higher admission standards and a right to work for higher degrees after completing their courses as Befelatanana Hospital in Tananarive.

Our film, shot on Wednesday (April 26) - the second day of the solidarity strike - shows a mass gathering of students and rally at the Alarobia stadium in the Capital. It was the second day of massive demonstrations by the students.

So far there have been no serious incidents and the security forces have done little more than keep watch over the proceedings, but the Government has branded the strikes as political and announced that it was prepared to take measures to combat them if they escalate.

The troubles come just as President Philibert Tsiranana prepares to take the oath next Monday (May 1st) for a third seven-year term as the Malagasy Republic's Head of State.
