  • Description

The trial of seven people accused of plotting to overthrow the Tanzanian Government last October opened at the High Court in Dar Es Salaam on Wednesday (24 June).

Heavily armed police guarded the court as the accused heard the Tanzanian Attorney-General, Mr. Mark Bomani, allege that the country would have been engulfed in chaos if a coup intended to overthrow the Government and kill President Nyerere had succeeded.

All seven have pleaded not guilty to three charges of treason and of knowing about treasonable offences but not reporting them.

Mr. Oscar Kambona, a former Minister now in exile in London has been accused of directing the alleged plot. The Government has said it may ask Britain to extradite him.

Among the defendants in dock were a former President of the Tanzanian women's organisation, Bibi Titi Mohamed; a former Labour minister and leader of the trade union movement, Michael Kamaliza; and a former military attache in Peking, Colonel William Chacha. The prosecution stated that the accused had intended to overthrow the Government while President Nyerere was in the Soviet Union on a State visit.
