Background: Defending Wimbledon champion Mrs Billie Jean King of the United States will meet Miss Chris Evert in an all-American Women's Single's Final in the Wimbledon Tennis Championships on Friday. (July 6)
In Wednesday's semi-final's, Miss Evert beat the top seed Mrs. Margaret Court of Australia 6-1, 1-6, 6-1, while Mrs King beat Miss. Evonne Goolagong of Australia, the 1971 champion, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Miss. Evert, the 18-year-old fourth seed, shattered Margaret Court's hopes of wining the "Grand Slam" of the World's four major titles for the second time.

Evonne Goolagong took a 3-1 lead in the first set but then lost five games in a row to drop the set.

In the second set Mrs King had two match points at 5-4 but Evonne Goolagong levelled the set at 5-5 and went on to win it 7-5.

The vital game in the third set was the seventh when a dropshot off the frame of her racket, helped Mrs King to break service. The American took the next game to lead 5-3. Miss Goolagong hit winners to save five match points int he last game before slicing a backhand shot into the net.

Mrs. Margaret Court was expected to beat Miss Evert but her play on Wednesday was dismal. In one vital game she served four double faults.

Mrs. Court did not hold her service once in the first set and Chris Evert quickly took a one set lead, 6-1.

Mrs. Court fought back and took the second set 6-1 in less than 20 minutes with fine serving and fierce volleys.

In the decider Miss Evert held her serve and then in the next game came Mrs Court's disastrous four double faults and she again lost her service in the sixth game.
