  • Description

Libya has pledged its support for Malta in its latest dispute with Britain and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) over rent for British Bases on Malta.

Malta's Prime Minister Dom Mintoff flew to Tripoli last week to hold talks with Libyan Leader Muammar Al Gaddafi.

The two leaders reviewed the present situation and in particular the dispute with Britain over the military bases, for which Malta is demanding an increase of 10 per cent in the 14 million pounds sterling paid annually by Britain and NATO.

Mr. Mintoff has demanded the extra 10 per cent (1,400,000 pounds sterling annually), to offset losses caused by the drop in value of sterling since the floating of the pound.

Colonel Gaddafi and Mr. Mintoff also studied steps that could be taken by their countries to extend and consolidate their friendly relations.
