  • Description

President Jean Bedel Bokassa arrived in Liberia (Saturday May 2nd) for a three-day state visit.

He and President Tubman have had along talks on African unity and relations between the two countries and have made a number of public appearances.

President Bokassa landed at the Liberian capital six hours late because heavy storms had forced aircraft to make an unscheduled stop. Nevertheless, thousands of students who had stood for hours awaiting President Bokassa gave him a warm welcome when he drove through the streets. Earlier President Tubman of Liberia, members of his cabinet and diplomatic corps had greeted the visiting president at the airport.

The two presidents began their talks the following day. The subjects they discussed included cultural and trade exchanges, bilateral talks and African unity.

Later President Bokassa visited the free port of Monrovia, where dockers gave him a tumultuous welcome, and industrial works near the city. The President was also shown around a fishery plant and a brewery.
