Background: MALAYSIAN ARMED FORCES ARE CONDUCTING ANTI-GUERILLA OPERATIONS IN NEIGHBOURING THAILAND FOLLOWING A BORDER AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

THE AGREEMENT ALLOWS MALAYSIA AND THAILAND TO DEPLOY TROOPS ON EACH OTHER'S TERRITORY FOR THE FIRST TIME.

ALTHOUGH MALAYSIAN AND THAI SECURITY FORCES HAVE BEEN CO-OPERATING FOR SOME TIME IN THE HUNT FOR GUERILLAS ALONG THEIR JUNGLE BORDER THE DECISION TO CROSS INTO EACH OTHER'S TERRITORY MARKS A NEW PHASE IN THEIR JOINT OPERATIONS.

THE BORDER AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED IN BANGKOK BY REPRESENTATIVES OF THE TWO NEIGHBOURS.

IN THIS OPERATION MALAYSIAN SECURITY FORCES PENETRATED FIVE MILES INTO SOUTH WEST THAILAND IN A SEARCH FOR A BAND OF GUERILLAS BELIEVED TO HAVE TAKEN SANCTUARY IN THE AREA. TROOPS OF THE 6TH MALAY REGIMENT SEARCHED CRAFT ON A RIVER SEPARATING THE TWO COUNTRIES, STOPPED VEHICLES AND MOTOR CYCLES ON THE THAI SIDE OF THE BORDER AND CHECKED PASSENGERS' IDENTITY CARDS.

THE SECURITY FORCES HAVE BEEN BUILDING BUNKERS, WHERE GUARD KEEP A24-HOURS LOOKOUT FOR SIGNS OF GUERILLA ACTIVITY.

SECURITY MEASURES WERE STEPPED UP ALONG THE BORDER FOLLOWING AN AMBUSH LAST JULY OF A MALAYSIAN ARMY PATROL IN WHICH SIX SOLDIERS DIED AND EIGHT WERE WOUNDED. A NUMBER OF REGIONS HAVE BEEN PLACED UNDER ROUND-THE-CLOCK CURFEW. ON MARCH 16 MALAYSIAN FORCES WIPED OUT A BORDER VILLAGE INSIDE THAILAND TO PREVENT ITS USE BY COMMUNIST GUERILLAS. THE POPULATION WAS DETAINED FOR INTERROGATION AND LATER RESETTLED AFTER ALLEGATIONS THAT THEY HAD ASSISTED GUERILLAS.

GUERILLA STRENGTH AND ACTIVITY ALONG THE MALAYSIA-THAILAND BORDER HAS INCREASED OVER THE PAST YEAR. THREE GUERILLA REGIMENTS, EACH OF 400 NEW, ARE BELIEVED TO BE POSITIONED IN SOUTHERN THAILAND REGIONS CLOSE TO THE MALAYSIAN BORDER.

REPORTS SAID THEY ARE LED BY CHIN PENG, WHO CONTROLLED ANTI-GOVERNMENT FORCES AGAINST BRITISH TROOPS IN MALAYA BETWEEN 1948 AND 1955.
