  • Description

Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York, President Nixon's persona representative to Latin America, arrived in Bogota, Colombia Tuesday (27 May) a few hours after a long conference with Nixon.

Bogota was the first stop on Rockefeller's second trip to Latin America. His visit led to disturbances in which 15 persons were injured in the Columbian capital. Students in Bogota burned United States flags and clashed with riot police.

One important subject which Rockefeller discussed with Nixon was the cancellation of Rockefeller's visit to Peru. The Peruvian government, which has had several disagreements with the United States lately, asked that Rockefeller cancel his stop to Lima.

After spending most of the morning with President Nixon, Rockefeller told newsmen that his first trip convinced him that all western hemisphere nations are interdependent.

A friendly crowd of about 250 persons greeted Rockefeller when his United States Air Force jet touched down at Bogota's airport. The eight-mile route from the airport to the center of the city was lined with police and Rockefeller did not see any of the disturbances.

Rockefeller's schedule calls for visits to Bolivia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela. He is to return to New York 4 June, and begin a third tour later in the month.
