  • Description

Following the decision by the Dutch Government to build up their forces in Netherlands New Guinea, in the face of "aggressive elements in the Indonesian Government's foreign policy", the aircraft carrier "Karel Doorman" is being made ready to sail, May 24/30, on a tour of the far east.

At Rotterdam the 18,040 carrier manned with British built fighter aircraft is being fitted out for a six month "flag showing" mission in the area. Officers and men of the ship have been hard at work over the past few days checking equipment and stores.

The "Karel Doorman" which is due to leave on May 31, will be accompanied by two destroyers.

Since Indonesia was granted Independence by the Dutch in 1949, the Government has claimed Netherlands New Guinea as part of their own country.
