  • Description

ELEVEN U.S. ASTRONAUTS WHO HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED TO THE APOLLO MOON LANDING PROJECT HAVE MOVED TO ARIZONA FOR ANOTHER STAGE IN THEIR TRAINING.

THEY ARE NOW STUDYING THE TYPES OF GEOLOGICAL FORMATION THEY EXPECT TO FIND WHEN TWO OF THEIR NUMBER WILL BE ROCKETED TO THE MOON. THE PARTY HAVE BEEN WORKING AT SUNSET CRATER NEAR FLAGSTAFF IN ARIZONA. THIS IS A WIDE VOLCANIC AREA AND HAS PROVIDED A USEFUL TRAINING GROUND FOR THE TEAM. THEY HAVE BEEN COLLECTING ROCK SAMPLES AND LEARNING TO PREPARE THEM FOR ANALYSIS.

ALSO SCHEDULED FOR THE PARTY WAS A VISIT TO KITT PEAK IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE STATE. THERE, THEY WERE ABLE TO STUDY THE MOON'S LANDSCAPE THROUGH THE WORLD'S LARGEST SOLAR TELESCOPE.

SUNSET CRATER WAS PICKED FORT THE FIELD EXERCISE BECAUSE IT IS THE SECOND LARGEST VOLCANIC FIELD IN NORTH AMERICA, AND BECAUSE EXPERTS THINK ITS DEBRIS MAY BE SIMILAR TO THAT ON THE SURFACE OF THE MOON.
