  • Description

A PROBLEM CONFRONTED THE AUTHORITIES IN ABIDJAN LAST WEEK, WHEN A 50 TON COMPRESSOR FOR A NEW THERMAL POWER STATION, ARRIVED AT ABIDJAN. IT HAS TO BE TRANSPORTED BY ROAD TO THE POWER STATION SITE, JUST OUTSIDE THE CITY.

THE COMPRESSOR IS THE HEAVIEST LOAD EVER TO BE TRANSPORTED IN THE IVORY COAST. A MECHANICAL HORSE DREW THE TRAILER ON WHICH THE COMPRESSOR WAS FIXED. TWO MOTOR CYCLE POLICEMEN ESCORTED THE MECHANICAL HORSE, WHICH TRAVELLED AT A SLOW WALKING PACE THE SEVEN MILES (13 KMS) TO THE POWER STATION SITE AT VRIDI.

THE FOUNDATION STONE FOR THE POWER STATION WAS LAID IN FEBRUARY OF THIS YEAR, AND IT IS SCHEDULED FOR COMPLETION IN 1969, AT A COST OF EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS (NEARLY GBP3 1/4 MILLION). IT WILL PRODUCE A TOTAL OF 32 MEGAWATTS OF THERMAL ELECTRICITY.

IN A SPEECH AT THE FOUNDATION LAYING CEREMONY, THE IVORY COAST MINISTER OF PLANNING, MONSIEUR MOHAMED DIAWARA SAID THAT THE DEMAND FOR ELECTRICITY WOULD MULTIPLY FOUR TIMES BY 1975.
