    ISRAEL'S FIRST HEART TRANSPLANT WAS SUCCESSFULLY CARRIED OUT ON THURSDAY (5 DECEMBER) IN THE BEILINSON HOSPITAL AT PETAH TIKVAH, NEAR TEL AVIV. THE PATIENT, A BANK EMPLOYEE, WAS SAID TO BE DOING WELL AFTER THE OPERATION.

    THE NEW HEART WAS GIVEN TO YITZHAK SULAM 41, FROM JAFFA.

    HE HAS LIVED IN ISRAEL SINCE LEAVING ALGERIA 20 YEARS AGO. HIS CONDITION IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN CRITICAL WHEN THE FAMILY AGREED TO SURGERY.

    DR. PINCHAS KOREN, DIRECTOR OF THE BEILINSON HOSPITAL, SAID THAT THE OPERATION LASTED THREE AND A HALF HOURS AND WAS CARRIED OUT BY PROFESSOR MORRIS LEVI, HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEST SURGERY AT THE HOSPITAL.

    THE OPERATION CAME A YEAR AFTER THE WORLD'S FIRST HEART TRANSPLANT BY DR. CHRISTIAN BARNARD IN SOUTH AFRICA. PROFESSOR LEVI, 42, SPENT SOME TIME AT THE MEDICAL INSTITUTE IN MINNEAPOLIS, U.S.A., AT THE SAME TIME AS DR. BARNARD.

    NO DETAILS WERE GIVEN ABOUT THE HEART'S DONOR, IDENTIFIED ONLY AS A VICTIM OF A ROAD ACCIDENT.
